| 520 | _aChitosan, a biodegradable and biocompatible polysaccharide derived from giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) shells, was investigated in this quantitative true experimental study to address the gap in accessible and eco-friendly menstrual pain relief solutions amid period poverty in marginalized Philippine communities, wherein chitosan was extracted through systematic demineralization with hydrochloric acid, deproteinization with sodium hydroxide, and deacetylation processes before being formulated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glycerol, and a cornstarch-xanthan gum heat-retention layer into 100%, 75%, and 50% heat patches, which were evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions using a protein denaturation test to measure anti-inflammatory activity and thermal stability testing through mass loss computation with data analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey post hoc comparisons, revealing that chitosan concentration significantly affected performance as the 100% formulation demonstrated the highest protein denaturation inhibition, and lowest mass loss, leading to the conclusion that increasing chitosan concentration enhanced patch effectiveness and demonstrated strong potential as a sustainable, cost-effective material for menstrual pain relief. | ||
