The increasing environmental impact of synthetic sanitary wipes has created a demand for sustainable alternatives derived from natural plant fibers. As the Philippines continues to face both environmental and economic challenges presented by these issues, this study aimed to develop sanitary wipes using coconut husks and banana fiber as an alternative to polyester-based commercialized wipes and to evaluate the effectiveness of these wipe prototypes against commercialized polyester-based wipes in terms of moisture retention, tensile strength, and its anti-microbial activity through a series of laboratory tests. This research study utilized a quantitative true experimental design with complete randomized sampling to ensure objective comparison among the coconut husk wipes, banana fiber wipes, and commercial wipes. The study evaluated moisture retention using gravimetric analysis, tensile strength by measuring the force through a Newton spring balance, and anti-bacterial properties using the zone of inhibition method. Results showed that the plant-based wipes demonstrated almost resembling results towards those of polyester-based wipes in terms of absorbency and tensile strength, although their moisture retention and structural strength were lower than commercialized wipes; both wipes showed no anti-bacterial property in the absence of anti-microbial treatments. Overall, the findings suggested that coconut husks and banana fibers combined possess a strong potential as plant-based alternatives for polyester-based wipes while promoting agricultural waste reduction and environmental sustainability. |
