Reading comprehension remains a critical challenge among Filipino students, as evidenced by the Philippines' consistently low rankings in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of implementing Literature Circles on the reading comprehension of Grade 9 students of Ateneo de Iloilo - Santa Maria Catholic School using a literary poem, part of their course outline in their English subject as a point of testing. This study employed a nonequivalent control group research design across two (2) Grade 9 sections where the researchers chose existing sections that appear similar, but where only one of these groups were given the intervention. Participants under the treatment group belong to the same section and were asked to participate in three (3) sessions of Literature Circles, whereas students in the control group used the traditional classroom-based learning. Both groups were given a 30-item sample test on the literary text 'Still I Rise' by Maya Angelou, as well as a survey questionnaire given to the treatment group regarding their experience towards Literature Circles. With the use of IBM-SPSS, the Paired Samples t-Test revealed that there was no significant difference in the pretest and posttest scores of those who participated in Literature Circles. While there was no significant difference, it is also crucial to note that there were quantifiable improvements in significant aspects even with limited time, serving as a benchmark and challenge for future researchers to improve on the implementation of Literature Circles as an established pedagogy. |
