Summary, etc. Chitosan, a substance extracted and found from crustacean shells, has antibacterial properties that fight off pathogenic bacteria, (Tharakan, 2006). In the year 2020, the Environmental Management Bureau, Region 6, found that Calajunan Creek is one of the tributaries for domestic, industrial, and residential waste in Iloilo River. Samples collected at the site were used to introduce the effectiveness of chitosan in treating contaminated water, through a water filtration housing system and to distinguish the potential of chitosan in water filter housing systems. Filtering wastewater removes toxic buildups of substances such as pollutants and microbes resulting in water that is clean for personal use or consumption. To achieve the aims of the study, water samples were collected from Calajunan creek, after which a pilot testing was done between two multi-layer filtration systems containing chitosan and one without. Then proceeded to the optimization of chitosan-based filtration systems containing 1 and 2 grams of chitosan, and each filtration system underwent 3 replicates to ensure reliability. The water quality before intervention did not have a significant difference. Moreover, the study introduces potential points of improvement for the use of chitosan-based filtration systems and will utilize pH level, Total Dissolved Solids, Dissolved Oxygen, and Coliform Count as the water parameters to determine the effectivity of the study.
