Summary, etc. |
Nutrition is one of the most vital factors to a growing individual as it supports the proper growth and development of an adolescent, and a lack of sufficient nutrition consumption may lead to undernutrition. Undernutrition refers to insufficient nutrition due to inadequate food intake. Specifically, this study focuses on students' protein intake, and it has been taken into consideration that 10% to 35% of our calories should come from protein. With that in mind, this study aims to clarify the protein levels of the top five most commonly bought foods in the Ateneo de Iloilo-Santa Maria Catholic School's canteen to prevent the occurrence of inadequate protein intake. To identify the presence of protein within the samples, Colorimetric Quantification was utilized and was done within two non-consecutive days. The color change within all five samples indicated a presence of protein, and thus were submitted to the Department of Science and Technology for the Kjeldahl method to be done for the specified crude protein amount within each meal. This process took 10 days, and the results showed that the amount of protein in the samples was approximately between 5-13 grams per 100 grams. These results were then presented to a dietician, the head of the school's canteen, and the two nurses for their opinions and recommendations for reliable information to conclude the research study. |
